READING:
Hot drinks are the biggest causes of burns in children. New research says parents must be more aware of the dangers of everyday things in the home. The most dangerous time for babies to burn themselves is from nine months. This is when babies begin crawling, walking and exploring. Babies do not know what is dangerous, so they touch everything. A researcher said parents may not know how high their baby can reach.
The researchers looked at data about burns from different U.K. hospitals. Almost 75 per cent of children burnt were under five. Most burn injuries happened to one-year-olds. Most of the burns were from hot drinks. A hot drink can burn a baby, even 15 minutes after making it. A baby's skin is thinner than an adult's skin, so it is easier to burn. Parents need to think carefully about where they keep hot objects. They must be out of reach of small children.
