The Reading / Listening - Level 1

Scientists say beef production damages the environment. It is ten times more harmful than the production of other meat. Cows need 28 times more land and 11 times more water than sheep. They also produce a lot of greenhouse gas. Potatoes, wheat, and rice need 160 times less land and produce 11 times less greenhouse gases. The scientists said the farming of animals is a big cause of global warming. Fifteen per cent of all greenhouse gas is from farming.

We could make our carbon footprint smaller by eating less beef. A professor said eating less beef is better for the environment than using the car less. Eating less beef means we could give the wheat that cows eat to feed starving people. Many governments do not want to try this. The professor said everyone should think about this carefully. He said that eating less meat, especially less beef, is good for the environment.
