The Reading / Listening - Level 0

Drivers in New York have to drive more slowly. There is a new speed limit of 40 kph. The city wants people to drive more carefully. It wants fewer accidents and deaths. The mayor wants to improve traffic safety to protect children and old people. Some people say the new limit will increase accidents.

Most countries have speed limits. The first speed limit was 16 kph. This was in the UK in 1861. The world's highest limit is 140 kph. Some roads have no speed limit, like Germany's Autobahns. The WHO said 1.24 million people die every year in traffic accidents. Speed limits could make this number smaller.
