Turbulence forces plane into emergency landing

An airplane made an emergency landing on Monday because of severe turbulence. Nearly 40 people were injured on the flight from Spain to Uruguay. Air traffic controllers told the pilot to make an emergency landing in Brazil. Many of the injured people went to hospital. Others went to Uruguay's capital city Montevideo by bus. A new plane flew other passengers to their final destination. Turbulence has injured many people recently.

Turbulence is the violent movement of air. Airplanes can survive dangerous winds. It is very rare for turbulence to make a plane crash. The biggest danger is when passengers do not wear a seat belt. They can be thrown around the cabin. Scientists from a university in the UK reported that climate change is making severe turbulence worse. Incidents increased by 55 per cent between 1979 and 2020.
