The Nestlé brand, Nespresso, has big plans to make its coffee business more sustainable. Nespresso makes and sells espresso machines and the coffee needed for the machine. Its new plan is called 'The Positive Cup'. It will make one of its products using totally sustainable methods. It will also help poor coffee farmers. It will invest $16 million in Africa, "to protect the future of the highest quality coffees and secure the livelihoods of the farmers".
Nespresso will recycle all of the aluminium coffee containers used in the machines and plant trees. It wants to be "100 per cent carbon neutral" by 2020 and reduce its carbon footprint. The CEO said sustainability has always done more than minimise damage. Actor George Clooney said the investment is important. He said it would provide, "much-needed income for hundreds of farmers and their families living in coffee communities".
